Why on earth didn't they leave that dock open to shipping. One of the excitements of navigating the barge round Goole docks is trying to miss the big ships - or rather have them miss you!

They did, as apartments but the low ceilings on each floor meant the demolition of same at every other level to accommodate the height which meant the plans have been shelved for a while as studies are going on. Another idea was to crate a central space with the apartment going around the perimeter but there's been no recent news. It'll mean the end for the heritage market of course.

There is no minimum height for rooms in the building regs. The height is fine if only wall lights are used. The centre core will need to be cut out. Cutting out the core and knocking out every other floor is expensive and leaves few apartments to sell.

Most of the Central Docks have been turned to glorified ponds to "accommodate canal boats". There is no facility to berth deep water ships as the docks were filled in to pond depths to make money for British Waterways/Peel. Dumping waste is lucrative. Of course canal boats have been a part of the dock system, and should remain so, however very peripheral to deep water vessels, which have been eliminated.

UNESCO stated that Liverpool has historic docks, but no historic ships. Well in a city that ocean going ships can berth at the city centre, (few cities have that) however only in the river not the enclosed docks there are few places to berth historic ships, unless it is a historic canal boat.

The city allowed this rape of the city's heritage - we are a deep water port, not a canal basin. These docks can be deepened quite easily. Re-instate the Princess Half-Tide river locks gates to allow ship access, and then get a couple of dredgers clearing the docks out and give us back what is ours.

Ask your councillors will they deepen the docks and give us back our heritage. If they say they will not then vote for one that will campaign for it.

Are you sure. So if I wanted to build an extension with a room with a four feet living height for the 7 dwarfs, i'd be allowed - don't think so.

Besides, whatever the building regs determine, it's up to the developer if he thinks expensive apartments with very low ceilings wouldn't sell and that's why it hasn't happened that way.

I think a credit crunch and lack of any firm plans for Central Docks may play a part. The warehouse is in a grotty industrial area and not the ideal place to live right now. I would move in if I knew in a few years all around would be on-line. I would not move into the place as it is not knowing when it would all be finished. A developer would have to ask low price as the district stands right now. He is better off waiting until some construction starts around about, or waiting until the infrastructure is improved and some buildings built.
