    Hi Kev

This might be the earliest photograph of a downtown city street scene but is not older than the 1858 photograph of St. George's Dock Gate that Chris48 posted, if the date of that is correct. Possibly the earliest Liverpool photographs were of industrial scenes such as the docks or of individual buildings such as St. George's Hall.

The world's oldest photo was taken in France in 1825 here...
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/1885093.stm

The first streetscape was in Paris:

Taken in 1838 of a busy street. The traffic in the street was too quick to appear in the photo because of the 10-minute exposure. One man who was standing at the street corner getting his shoes polished and therefore became the first man in the street picture (name unknown).

Liverpool must have one or two piccies around the 1830s.

I've got The Strangers Guide to Liverpool for 1843.
No photos in it of course, but there is a mention of photography.
Funnily enough, with all the books I've got of Liverpool, I've never noticed any really old photographs, and I'll be willing to bet that the 1858 view (assuming the date is correct) is about the earliest of Liverpool.
I've had a quick look through my books and there's not much before 1890, which was the time when pictorial postcards first became really popular, thus creating a demand for photos.
