Regarding another comment above. I'd say they never said look at me i'm a cheeky chappie from Liverpool, they were just from Liverpool which made them intrinsically what they were regarding their humour and cockiness. They never used the city to make a play on it.
Agree totally mate. They were what they were because they were from the city and that was it, end of. I have never heard any of them from interviews at the time playing up the 'scouse wit' thing. They were just 4 cocky lads.

And as you said, the fact is they were more popular than Jesus at the time so Lennon was just saying what he observed, not what he believed.
