There is an old folks home at the back called 'Holmleigh'.
I wonder if it was an old house?

    Hiya Daisy ,
I may be way off the mark on this one , but i think it's the old convent, & La Sagesse School.

    La Sagesse

    1911
Convent High School. 'Holmleigh'. Closed in the Catholice reorganisation of 1983, amalgamating with Notre Dame Woolton and Our Lady of the Assumption Secondary Girls to form St Julie’s. The Head, Sister Charles (Miss P R SOUPER) went to St John Almond.

I've just remembered as kids we used to play in a field at the back of the school, we knew it as Jacks Field ,

Postcards (1920s, I think) exist showing girls in the grounds, and you can see the building.

Hello PhilipG, Kev, gorgeous and DaisyChains

I am an old Mossley Hill - Aigburth resident but I can't quite place where this is. Could you orient me, please? Thanks in advance. I keep thinking there may be some relationship between Holmefield Road and Holmleigh but I might be offbase there.

    Hi Chris
It's on this section of Aigburth Road.
Your Holmefield link is probably something to do with it.

    http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&...9911&z=15&om=1

    Pretty much opposite Ranelagh Drive.

That link was interesting in that it showed the school opened in 1911.
Obviously not built then, because it looks like the original house was used.
These are B&W photocopies of postcards, which explains their rough appearance.
(I was friends with a postcard dealer who let me photocopy cards I couldn't afford).
The top one was sent by Meg in 1911 and the message she wrote was: "This is a view of this convent lately taken; some of my pupils are in the scene. See all the rhododendrons! The place is full of them and they looked gorgeous all in bloom."
The bottom one was sent in 1913, and shows that the school had boys as well.

    Hi Tony and Philip

Thank you both. The 1835 map and images of the convent are wonderful. This modern satellite Google map shows the area today.

    All the best
