    Default Belgium/Ypres

Just returned from a trip to Belgium. Visited my two Great Grandfathers who died in WW1 and toured some of the Ypres Salient.

You can see photos on the wartime website, link below.

    Interesting...

I have been researching the Anzio Landing Battle where my father fought... it apparently was also like the WWI trench warfare. From a book intro -

In January 1944, the Allies decided to land at Anzio in order to overcome the stalemate at Cassino. This amphibious landing has become one of the most controversial campaigns of World War II. Questionable decisions by the Allied leadership led to three months of World War I-style trench warfare, and the entire beachhead suffered from continuous German observation and bombardment.

My father never talked about it, and as I read more, I can see why... After 3 weeks at Anzio his division was given leave with 25% losses....

I have visited Ypres , the Menin Gate ceremony every night is one of the most moving services I have ever attended, surrounded by thousands of names without a known grave.

    Lest we forget

Thanks for all of that Spike, tis a very sad reminder to us all. I see a V J Strudwick of The Rifle Brigade was only 15. I think you have to see it all to fully understand the cost in young lives, glad to hear that you visited the German War Cemetery, they were no different in their loss !
    Thanks again !
