Default England out of Euro 2008

anyone upset? I thought it was quite funny myself, although fear for Gerrard as it may have a major downer on his Liverpool form knowing there's no tournament at the end of the season to strive for - England games being bigger than Liverpool ones in his own words of course. Felt sorry for Crouch who must finally have thought he'd shook off being famous for that robotic dance. However, on the whole I feel more Scouse than English so couldnt care about the national team either way, especially when their fans sometime boo players onto the pitch and cant play Germany without referring to WW2.

    Default McClaren gone.

Agree with you Ste. I would have thought at least we can't suffer an injury to our club players whilst on International duty until I learned that the F.A. are planning friendlies instead of giving the players the 'rest' they always moan they need.

A hapless manager devoid of ideas, tactics and picking a team. Crouch was the only player to come out with any cred. In an interview 2 days ago he was sure Beckham was playing hailing him the best dead ball specialist and crosser we could have who has created many goals for him.

Most of those players you could normally rely on couldn't even lift the ball over the first defender last night and that awful pitch didn't help but it was the same for both teams.

With all the injuries (which are no excuse anyway) why then make changes such as Carson that were not needed.

Carragher 'resigned' from the team because the likes of King and Brown were getting in the team ahead of him so what does McClaren do - leave Brown on the bench and bring back 'retired' Campbell and bring in a rookie - Lescott.

I'm philosophical enough these days to see that if they don't go through then they don't deserve it - not conceeding three at home after little Israel done us a mighty favour to get us into that position, at one time Motson was even (tongue in cheek i'm sure) hoping Andorra might pull off the impossible.

    Mourinho anyone???

Default England football coach Steve McClaren sacked.

England football coach Steve McClaren sacked
Nov 22 2007 By David Prentice

STEVE McCLAREN was sacked today following England’s failure to reach the European Championship finals.

An emergency meeting of the FA board took the inevitable decision at meeting in Soho Square at breakfast time this morning.

The vote of the 12-member board was believed to have been unanimous, and McClaren will walk away with an expected £2.5m pay-off just 18 months after being installed.

McClaren’s tenure lasted just 18 matches, along with Kevin Keegan the shortest full-time England managerial reign on record.

And the search will now begin for a successor.

Jose Mourinho has immediately been installed as 4-1 favourite by the bookies, closely followed by Martin O’Neill, interviewed but rejected by the FA 18 months ago, Brazilian Felipe Scolari and Guus Hiddink, whose Russian side will now go to the European Championship finals in Austria and Switzerland next summer in England’s place.

McClaren ended his reign with a 3-2 defeat by Croatia, giving him the worst losing sequence of any England manager – 28 per cent of his 18 matches in charge ending in defeat.

Steve McClaren remained in the England team hotel at The Grove as the FA powerbrokers arrived at Soho Square to decide his fate.

FA chief executive Brian Barwick was an early arrival, just after half-past six this morning.

FA chairman Geoff Thompson followed around an hour later - with the likes of Bolton chairman Phil Gartside, Sir Dave Richards and Football League chairman Sir Brian Mawhinney as well as Manchester United chief executive David Gill arriving soon after.

As soon as they appointed that turkey along with Venables, I knew nothing would come of that team. If they qualified it would have been an embarrassment in the finals.

The FA are to blame for installing a manager with little experience running a top club.

Jose it is then. He has been waiting for this job or the Liverpool job.

Eriksson was contracted till 2008 or 2009 so I assume they are, unless a one off payment was agreed when he took the City job.

As a banner on the Kop proclaims, "We're Not English, We're Scouse!", which pretty well articulates my own indifference to the England team.
Besides,I suspect that in the next decade club football, in the form of the Champions League, will completely overshadow the fortunes of national teams. Perhaps, we've reached that point already.
My only concern from the England fall-out is that Gerrard's appetite for Saturday's game could be affected by the Croatia result.

    We are actually Liverpudlians.

Gerrard was a disgrace and that result put him in a poor light as a captain. Even with that team, with 90,000 screaming fans behind you, you should win.

"We're not English we are Liverpudlians" doesnt look quite so good on a banner though. Gerrard has always been a poor captain in my opinion and it was there for all to see the other night. When the players needed inspiration and lifting, there was none forthcoming from him.

    Default Goodnight Vienna

England are just not good enough - plain and simple. They made a mess of a group they should have qualified through. I think the underlying problem though lies with the FA itself. It doesn't matter who manages England because the FA are an incompetent group of dinosaurs who are still living off England's 1966 win. That coupled with so-called 'superstars' are the real problems of English football. (and not, as some would like to think the influx of foreign players). The press conference showed one 'dinosaur' claiming England was "the best league in the world." It might be the most demanding and gruelling but it is certainly not the best in the world. What was even more intriguing was that none of the countless journalists present questioned this...

One bright note - at least we won't be subjected to "WAGS and FLAGS" next summer
    It is Accomplished
