Families face fight to save homes from demolition

Nov 2 2007 by David Bartlett, Liverpool Daily Post

    ADVERTISING

HUNDREDS of families living in one of Britain’s first new towns are battling to save their homes.

Around 200 houses and flats could be demolished on Skelmersdale’s Firbreck and Findon estate as part of a £350m regeneration scheme to breathe new life into the town centre. more

I work in Skem. This is the sight that greeted me on half mile island as I nipped out to their local shopping centre, the Concourse, yesterday lunchtime.

The artic had taken out a lamp post.

I hope the driver is alright, I haven't heard anything.

Skem has no traffic lights but around 30 roundabouts instead, the idea being to keep the traffic more free flowing, rather like Milton Keynes.

The half mile roundy is Europe's biggest roundabout, i'm told the bloke who designed Skem committed suicide - don't know if that's true or Skem had anything to do with his decision?

Lots of grass verges there but lack of pavements make it a joggers nightmare.

    30 round abouts!

One I find evil enough when out cycling.

Yes Max. Some of them have very wide sweeps as well. I don't know if the wind caught this truck and if it was near empty, it could well be blown over as the Thelwall viaduct gets closed to high sided vehicles when it's windy and 3 lorries overturned there in the winds last week. Either that or the curve of the road and/or speed could topple those things over.
