Default Toxteth Library - Windsor Street

AN HISTORIC Liver-pool library is to get a £1.3m makeover after Lottery funding was secured.

The city council has successfully bid for the cash to transform Toxteth Library so that it can offer a broader range of activities to the local community.

The library, on Windsor Street, was opened in 1902 and attracts over 1,000 people a week, but its facilities badly need updating. more

    It's about time!
It's a fantastic building, which is overlooked.
I am in there often, and the range of books is really limited.(but the local history section is actually quite good!)
They should open up the top floors and let us have a little look around

    Default Toxteth Library

My abiding memory of the place ,from a few years ago, was the awful state of disrepair the building had been allowed to deteriorate into by Liverpool City Council. It's a delightful building which will benefit from refurbishment. Let's hope they reverse the gross act of municipal vandalism and scrap off the paint sprayed onto the glorious wall tiles.

    New chapter for old library

Feb 2 2008 by Ben Turner, Liverpool Echo

A £1.3m MAKEOVER of Toxteth library has won the go-ahead.

The grade II listed building on Windsor Street was opened in 1902 and attracts more than 1,000 people a week.

Liverpool council agreed to the work after winning part of an £80m investment by the Big Lottery Fund to widen community learning.

The money will be spent on refurbishing and upgrading the building, new meeting and study rooms, exhibition space, toilets, baby- changing facilities, IT equipment, a refreshment area and a performance space.

Building work is due to start in July, and a temporary mobile library will be provided until the building reopens in December.

Executive member for leisure Cllr Colin Eldridge said: “Libraries are much more than just books these days, and it is great a deprived area is getting state-of-the-art provision like this.

“It will benefit the whole community from pupils to pensioners, and by upgrading the building I am sure it will prove to be a real positive landmark.”

About time too. Liverpool City Council have really made a mess of this delightful early 20th C building funded by the Carnegie Trust. One particular act of vandalism was to spray paint the beautiful glazed entrance wall tiles.

A LIVERPOOL library at the heart of Europe?s oldest Chinese community has closed its doors for a ?1.3m refurbishment.

The Grade II-listed Toxteth Library will reopen in autumn next year, following work to transform the historic building.

When the building first opened, men and women were separated in different reading rooms and the children?s library looked like a classroom with rows of high desks and benches.

Now it will be fitted with Wi-Fi throughout and new computers ? and areas long closed to the public brought back into use.

Liverpool City Council successfully bid for the money from the Big Lottery Fund, and this will be used to create a new children?s section, exhibition space, refreshment area, and study and computer rooms.

The basement will also be re-opened for community activities and performances.

First opened in 1902 by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, the library attracts more than 1,000 people a week, including visitors to the popular Chinese book collection.

Situated in the heart of Europe?s oldest Chinese community, the library has more than 800 registered users who describe themselves as Chinese.

John Keane, learning and social inclusion manager for library services, said the transformation would restore and incorporate the buildings heritage.

He said: ?It?s fantastic because the library?s big basement and gallery, which have been closed to the public for many years, will be brought back into use.

?We will also be able to install a three-floor lift, making the building accessible to all, and we will be able to buy new books to add to our collection.
