    Hi Marie

Where in Soho St did you live? Most of my relatives were from the Four Squares. See post entitled 'Gardens, Tenements, Courts' for a pic of Soho Street (last page).

My Mam and Dad originated from Queen Anne Place.

Marie1 - just replied to you on the intro thread. I hung around the 4 squares now and then. Yes, lots of characters - also from around Jenky and Langy.

For pics of the tennies, see my website mentioned below.

My grandad, William Cross and his brothers Bert and George had a carpentry business, Excelsior Sawmills, in Soho Street. Until the kids burnt it down that is. It would have broken all contemporary health and safety rules- open fireplaces, piles of sawdust everywhere, machinery and band saws without guards, cats all over the place... Bert lost most of his fingers in the machines as a kid but could still pick up panel pins with the stumps that remained. They produced marvellous work. I loved visiting the place as a kid! Anyone remember them? They're all dead now of course.

Default My Grandparents lived at no5 Soho street!

My Grandparents (Tom and Elizabeth Adams) lived at number 5 Soho street, my Dad and Aunt (wally and Rosy) grew up there! My grandmother was affectionately known as "Nin" and ""Ninny" Adams.

I used to visit as a boy and remember it well, they lived on the ground floor corner, and used to own (up to the 1950's I think) a cooked meat shop and takeaway on the Dock road, which I understand saw many a "fight" between Eastern European seaman!

She moved to JF Kennedy Heights when Soho was pulled down, she was put in a 6th floor flat, never settled there. I don't live in Liverpool now, but understand they have been demolished too!

    Hi Jed

    I have seen your site!

I was feeling rather "nostalgic" a few days ago and was typing in old "haunts" and areas I grew up in and know. I typed in Soho Street and your site came up, it is wonderful, I truly enjoyed looking at the old photo's.

One in particular was taken around Soho Street a few days before my 9th birthday, seems light years away now!

I even remember some of the old characters who used to wander the city centre in the 70's.

Keep it up, I am sure your site brings many a smile of nostalgia to many people.

Yes, I hung around there. Loads from in my class and year were from there as were those in lower and upper years. Three schools, my own (Bishop Goss aka St. Joeys) joined forces with St. Anthonys and The Friary (with many four squares residents) when going into the secondary school we attended which was St. Gregory's in Prince Edwin Street.
