Not heard of them. There was a street, Springfield Street known to us all as Springy though, or you're not thinking of Spring Heel Jack are you, last seen on Langsdale Street, scaling the steeple of SFX Church? Would the surname be Spring, as I have heard of that but didn't know any of them.

For over forty years my aunt had a fruit shop in Soho St-Rimmers- on the block from Langsdale St to town .Next to Weighwells the butcher.
Three aunts ( or more at times) worked there. Nellie, Edie and Nancy. My dad's wagons ( James Rimmer) delivered the fruit and vegetables to many of the shops around there.Nellie was a big supporter of the Shewsbury Boys Club and did lots of fund raising for them. She is 94 and lives in Australia with her family.

I knew the Spring family from Sohoie.. very well..
Dicky Spring was a great character, a very small funny man..
very smart and wore a dicky bow..
he bevvied regularly in my mams pub The Pontack on Christian St, outside Gerard Gardens..
his sister, Josie Spring.. (better known by her married name.).. lived in Gerard Gardens..
Josie was my next door neighbour in later years where I live today.. a lovely woman and friend..
and a true family friend from The Pontack days going back a long long time..
Her husband Joey..the quiz team legend, Robert Mitchum look alike.. was in our pub pool team in The Ponnie.. he was a great man.
and the family these days are all my good friends.. great days, with great memories..
The Ponnie... the stuff of legend, ask anybody from the area that knows their history..

Hi Gerard just been talking about the Pontack, Tommy my husband used to go there with mates from Gerard Gardens and the four squares, it was one of his first pubs and often recalls the times he had there.
What years did your Mam have the Pontack?

    Hiya Lesley..

My Mam was Peggy Gaskill, and she was born in the slum dwellings that was Gerard Street
    before Gerard Gardens were built...

On moving into Gerard Gardens in 25c my Mams sister Kathleen was the 1st child born in Gerard Gardens..

My Mam did the rounds as a barmaid in the Walkers pubs around Scottie back in the 50's
She then became a relief manager and ran lots of pubs on Scottie..
eventually getting her 1st pub of her own..
The Brown Cow on Dublin St/Gt Howard St which I was born upstairs in in 1957..

My Mam got the Ponnie in 1968 and had it until 1986, making her the longest serving tennant to have the Ponnie..

I spent most of my life in Gerard Gardens as a kid in 25c which was my Mams house on the Hunter St side...
I moved out the Ponnie in 1977 and moved into 25d on the top landing, right above my Mams/Ninnys... when I married Kate from 16B Gerard Gardens..

I know EVERYBODY from the area... and they know me, thats a fact anybody will vouch for.
unless they are them that never stepped foot in the place that make a name for themselves talking about growing up in Gerard Gardens... and I can bring numerous people on here to vouch there are people like that...

Do you ever feel like shouting Lesley.. ?
"Hey.. thats not right, this is what happened, I was there, you weren't"
I do... lots of the time where Gerard Gardens is concerned...

I still live in the area.. about 200 yards from the Ponnie....
I went to Bishop Goss school and made my 1st communion there...
I had my wedding reception in St Joeys/Bishop Goss basement under the school..
and my Mam with having a licence to sell alcohol put on many a night in that
basement for 'do's' ... and, a few New Years Eve parties in the old Library
next to the Ponnie on Christian Street..
Anybody who knows the area will know of my Mam.. "Peggy Pontack"
if they dont.... they are not worth listening to...
The Pontack was a big part of Gerard Gardens folklore...
and that, is a fact.... sadly, the pub never gets a mention these days..
not surprising really.... those 'In the know' never had a bevvie in the place.. fact.

Can you name some names Lesley ?... surnames etc of the people you mention..?
I'm wondering if I know them...

    Also...
would you like to see inside The Ponnie as it looks today ?
and some ariel photos of the area as is now ?.... Bishop Goss etc... ?

    Thanks Lesley..

Thanks Lesley for the PM... I'll reply later as I've a bit to tell you..
I know a few of the people you mention, very well.
one of the lads you mention was my partner when we were security guards
for 10 years in the polytech on Byrom St.. now the JMU right where the back of Gerard Crescent was..

He also worked for my mam behind the bar in the Ponnie in the early 70's
his family are married into my family...
they still live in the area and are my good friends...
I'll tell you more about his Mam and the other lads you mention later...

    Ta Lesley...
