Very interesting, marky. Wanting to find out more about the Resurgam, the world's second mechanically propelled submarine, built in Birkenhead in 1879, I found this interesting site about the wreck of the sub off Rhyl where she foundered on February 25th 1880 while being towed:

    http://www.3hconsulting.com/SitesResurgam.htm

Resurgam, a steam-powered submarine, was designed and patented by Manchester clergyman Reverend George William Garrett. The submarine was built in 1879 by Cochran & Co in Birkenhead for the then cost of £1500.

That same wreck site cited above, by the way, has information on the wreck of the Mary Rose and other interesting wrecks around the UK -- worth a look-see.

The original Resurgam is in good condition and there was talk of raising her. She sunk while being towed to Portsmouth from Birkenhead. The crew got out as they had trouble with the tow line. The hatches could not be secured from outside the sub, only inside, so waves went over the sub and down the hatch sinking the brand new sub. It was the first modern submarine.

    Does the replica actually work?

Great pic Lindy, got one of that myself and the back. I wonder what some other English cities except London would find to put on their buses?

ps. I see the Liver was voted most iconic N.W. building (somehow Morrisey pipped the Beatles and Oasis in the music catergory )
