    Visitation of God

On April 12 1856 details of the death of Mary Spencer was reported to local readers. The report stated how during a service at St Bartholomew’s Church the previous Sunday, Mary Spencer, the wife of a cow keeper in Prince Edwin Street, suddenly collapsed mid-service falling forward in her pew. The sermon was brought to an immediate halt as fellow parishioners rushed to her aid, but she was already dead. An inquest returned the rather appropriate verdict of, ‘died by the visitation of God.

For centuries, doctors struggled in the darkness over the causes of disease and death, and how the human body functioned. If a person died, because of the doctor's limited knowledge they could only describe the cause of death as a fever, apoplexy, or convulsions, or what he could visibly see such as a head wound, or evidence of a lifestyle such as over indulgence of drink.

Occasionally he would describe the cause of death as a Visitation of God. Used in a more religious time than ours, it meant the death was inexplicable and it was thought that God had decided that it was time for the person to die.

It later came to mean that the person died of natural causes.
    Very interesting !

I know one woman who fainted in the first pew and rather embarrassingly revealed herself as her legs fell open. 'is that Fanny green' asked the Priest. 'No' said the alter boy, it's just the light from the stained glass windows.

The priest feeling terribly embarrassed for Fanny green said 'No man should look at her and see what I can see or may god strike you blind' , the alter boy replied 'I think i'll risk one eye'.
