Endless Power Play on the Plains

We, the people, demand power
for our DIRECTV DVRs with TiVo,
our iTunes for Mac and PC.

The veteran rancher urges preservation
for the last traces of buffalo jump,
medicine wheel, yellow teepee rings
in parched prairie grass;

where bison thundered
and Sioux hunted, powerlines
and utility company's all-terrain
vehicles menace remains
as the wind on the plains
whispers of Sioux ghosts:

Flights of arrows
flights of eagles
take our land
take our lives
do with them
as you please.

Long-moldering treaties,
forgotten entreaties;
peacepipes smoked,
endless rope-a-dope.

Mortmain or
legerdemain,
whatever you do
don't refrain
don't refrain.
