    Default The newspaper covered bed

On Friday, my book on Picture Post on Liverpool will be in the shops. It contains a fascinating collections of photographs, published and unpublished, taken by photographers of the famous but now defunct magazine. During my research, I made many unexpected discoveries. The most interesting story was of an article on Liverpool’s slums that was [...]

Thanks Colin , that picture graphically portrays the extent of poverty a portion of the working class people of this city had to endure, it links in nicely with the thread "Living on Tick" on going on the forum at the moment, food for thought for one or two posters ,i think.
I will certainly be buying your book. I find that aswell as good content the Bluecoat Press publications are always printed on high quality paper and are a pleasure to own.
..best of luck with the sales Colin, not that you need it ,the book is assured to be a big success.

Very sad photograph, Colin. You don't appear to give a date for the photo though. I am guessing Forties to Fifties, is that right? In any case, it's a sad commentary that such a scene could have occurred within living memory of many of us.

    Hi Chris,

My apologies, the date was 1956 and I have corrected the blog to reflect that. Fortunately Thurston Hopkins' fantastic photographs have survived to show ours and future generations that the 1950s were not about 'you've never had it so good' but about pretty desperate living conditions for a good number in the community.

No newspapers on the bed, in our house, but in winter, Mum used to take the shelves out of the oven and wrap them in an old blanket (they were very hot) and use them a bed warmers.
    Bliss for cold tootsies!
Habit stopped once we moved to Portland Gardens in 1950.

Hard to believe this could be 1956! Heartbreaking to see how some people lived....and I though we were hard up!
Does the big headline say 'slimming method'?

You can add me to the list for a sale of your book Colin as I do with all your old Liverpool photograph books

The headline does indeed say that Lizzie, a very evocative photo.
