    Default Bixteth Street

Taken on the 22nd April 1968, this Harry Ainscough view with Exchange Chambers on the right is looking towards St. Paul's Square where the church and pub of the same name once stood. This area was once densely populated by the Welsh. The Stadium is in the distance in front of the John Moores Littlewoods building, now Plaza. Thanks to the LRO.

Great pic Ged, I spend many a happy hour in The Stadium, and unhappy hours in St Paul's Eye hospital. Question, does anyone know what was there before they built St Paul's?

Kendo nagasaki or something like that. That tag wrestling stuff - what a phoney load of bollix. Kent Walton trying to make it sound interesting and it always finished at 4.45 in time for Dicky Davies with his bit of grey hair in the front to do the full time scores.

I've got more to post up of around here including one I took of the St. Paul's pub just before it was demolished. My shipping 'round' took me all over here including the cotton exchange and No1 Old Hall street - the chamber of commerce. I had to take the mail to the post office by the spiral staircase pub too. I should have taken a pic of that block of shops.

My brother took me to the Stadium when I was young and we watched Dirty Jack Pye, Jackie Pallo and I think it was Billy Two Rivers who sported a mohican style haircut.

It was great entertainment but a bit frightening for a youngster with the crowd shouting at Jack Pye.

Only went a couple of times to Wrestling at the Stadium, remember it was on Friday nights not Saturday afternoon so it must have been recorded for tele. My brother went every week for years. Kent Walton's other job was introducing Cool For Cats one of the music programmes on tele. Couldn't believe how baggy the cozzies were on the wrestlers and how old and beaten up they were. The only thing that was real were the red marks on their arms when they tied them up in the ropes. Real sweat and sawdust atmosphere old chairs being throw around after a bad decision.

Would love to see some of the photos of O'Connors we went there from the day it opened and had many great times. We used to hire the room upstairs for private parties especially after my husband had had an exhibition at the Bluecoat or end of term at the Art College. No charge because they knew the bar tab would be huge and Brian and Austin who were managers put on incredible food. Jimmy Moore acted as a bank manager, lawyer and personal adviser to his customers. Later it was Flan and Joe great hosts and always had your drink on the bar before you sat down.

Taken with my own fair hand in 1990 as I sensed a demolition job about to begin.

A photograph taken in 1968 showing the demolition of the building on the corner of Bixteth street and Tithebarn street.
