If World Heritage Status came with a 5.5 Billion prize it would be worth defending.

True.....but otherwise,I think we'd manage quite well without it! Let the tourists/investors decide!

I dont think I've met a single person from outside the city who has said they came here on the basis they'd heard it was a world heritage site.

Am I right in thinking though, if the world heritage status is stripped, the scheme will then be called in by the government for a public enquiry?

The Government ministers involved have already mooted they would give this scheme the go ahead, I believe it's not compulsory anyway that it would be called in. In this economic climate and especially now since the 30 year freedom if information release about the 'managed decline', I doubt any minister would put the kibosh on 5.5b of private investment into Liverpool.

Enlgish Heritage has no powers whatsoever to call a public inquiry. It can only refer the matter to the Secretary of State. Bear in mind that is Eric Pickles, who does what he is told by David Cameron. It was cameron who granted Liverpool Waters enterprise zone status, basically giving it the nod. He won't want to hold it up and should wave it through.

There is a good thread here of how Wayne C (He of the appropriate initials) has been rumbled as a one man band and a great pic of what we must preserve at all costs. See what you think .

No. No connection between the two.

A very silly thread full of tall concrete admiring pots. Wayne has a point. A big point. He is not against modern architecture, just preserving what we have. Modern developments in Liverpool over 75 years have been dire.

Peel = Harry Hyams (of Centre Point fame, who wanted to fill in the Albert Dock). We will end up with what we have been dished up at the South Docks....

The above was the wonderful Herculeneum Dock. Look what we got.

Then look at the Echo Arena, which looks like an IKEA shed. They are planning another shed at Queens Dock. Expect more of the same from Harry Hyams, oh sorry, Peel.

Liverpool has something worth preserving and uncovering.

Deprived of its unique dockland waters Liverpool
becomes a Venice without canals, just another city, no
longer of special interest to anyone, least of all the
tourist. Would we visit a modernised Venice of filled in
canals to view its modern museum describing
    how it once was?
