    Default Byrom Street JMU.

Formerly the Technical College and known to us local kids back in the 70s as the poly or polytech when we used to climb its railings for footy matches in its car park. It's main structure was built in 1957 and in fact the steel framework can be seen newly erected on the opening credits of the film 'Violent Playground' which was released by Rank in 1958. When opened, the city engineers department used its high vantage point to record images of various parts of Byrom Street which capture some of the buildings that were to be lost when Byrom Street was widened for the third time a few years later.

From Liverpool Corporation's publication from the 1960s showing it's buildings off.

Tysons cranes constructing the tall block in 1970/71 as seen from a back veranda on Lionel House. We lived in the top block, Thurlow House and the top landing, end house vantage point gave us a brilliant view of the progress of this building being constructed.

    Excellent Ged!

I'll take a couple of comparative shots later in the week.

The foyer is now unrecognisable - shame LJMU didn't keep the Jan van der Straet 'Distillation' picture on the wall.

Thanks for those early shots Ged ,very interesting they were too.
My earliest recollections of the polytech, are visiting there on a school trip in the 70s, I didn't actually study there ,but I did eventually attend Old Swan Tech, looking back, they both had the same post war educational basic ,no frills build feel about them.

The Byrom Street Tower Building prior to the re-clad and the new Tom Reilly Building appearing over the rooftops of Gerard Street.

Byrom Street in the 70s? Ged, maybe you can date it more accurately.
