    Default Chancery Building Paradise Street

Does anyone know what this building was built to house?

It is at no. 96 Paradise Street on the same side as the new bus station and is part of a group including Casartelli's; Church House (formerly a Seaman's Mission and Temperance Pub) at the corner of Hanover and Paradise Streets; No. 12 Hanover Street (formerly warehouse); the Seaman's Mission (demolished and built over)

Maybe Philip can help here but Chancery here means the Lord Chancelor's court, a division of the high court of justice and a place also used to house public records, so maybe....?

I'm in the Library in Town at the moment, checking how my photos look!
They always look a bit dark on my PC.
    (Is there a brightness control?)

Then I'm going to snap today's liner.

I know the building you mean, but don't know exactly what it's all about.
I'll check when I get home.

Philip. There should be some controls on your monitor itself. There may be a wheel underneath the screen if it's of the older type. Flatscreens tend to have a minus/plus push button at the bottom of the screen and a menu pops up for contrast, brightness etc.

Default Chancery House/Gordon Smith Institute for Seamen.

96 Paradise Street was built 1899 as the Gordon Smith Institute for Seamen, with library, reading room and assembly hall for sailors ashore.
(Founded 12 September 1820 as the Liverpool Seamen's Friend Society by Non Conformists.)
The Institute closed in the 1960s and was converted into offices in 1980-2, which is probably when it was called Chancery House.

Ged, my monitor is as you describe it.
    I'll investigate it later.

    It is indeed.
The Sailors Home used to be over the road.
(The new John Lewis is there now).
It can be seen on my photo of the Seamens clinic.
It's the building with the red tower.

Yes, that seamen's clinic was also known as the semen clinic. The Cleveland pub next door used to have strippers and a few dodgy characters (well, when I looked through the window when passing anyway)

I used to play pool in that pub when I worked in Jamaica Street in 1986! Don't remember the strippers though.
