    The high rise experiment was an almost unmitigated disaster. The motives were honest enough – clear the slums and give families modern, light flats with bathrooms and all mod cons.     I'm wondering if the church is St Polycarps (but wouldn't the Old Stingo pub be in the pic too) or is it the one on Upper Parly.

    Think i've got it. Oak and Eldon Heights in Birkenhead had V shaped concrete stanchions like that (as did Entwistle) and a chess board design on the gable end.
