Default Liverpool Zoological Gardens West Derby Road 1832 - 63

There is already and existing thread discussing Liverpool's zoos/ zoological gardens here. I'd like to add these pics that I don't think I have posted these before...one might exist somewhere.

Nice one Kev. I wonder sometimes to whatever happened to my Grand-dads gorilla ? I wonder if it ended up in Chester Zoo.

    Hi Kev

    Thanks!

I have not seen these views before either. One of my prize possessions is a Liverpool token from the zoo. One side shows an elephant and the wording "VISITORS CHECK". On the other side, there are six lines of wording that read: "LIVERPOOL ZOOLOGICAL GARDENS ESTABLISHED 1833. THOS ATKINS" -- the date of 1832 you cite is slightly different for the zoo's establishment. Sorry I don't have pics of the visitors check to post. Philip G. Mayer has some information on Liverpool zoos on his Flickr site and he similarly says Atkins' Liverpool Zoological Gardens was established in 1833 and closed in 1863. There's a drawing of a rhino from the zoo here and some amusing information on the Liverpool rhino and it being loaned out to Glasgow and elsewhere here.

When I worked at Dunlops, Rice Lane, I remember being told the site was originally a zoological gardens, and one of the surviving buildings had been the monkey house.
