LAST year's Sunrise Fund Santa Dash in Liverpool was a world record.

The Guinness Book of Records has confirmed that Merseyside's festive race has set anew benchmark for the greatest number of Santa suit-wearing runners.

The 3,921 runners raised more than £70,000 for the ECHO's Sunrise Fund and have made the 2005 run most successful event yet.

Kop legend Kenny Dalglish took part in the 5km dash alongside fellow ex-Anfield star Ian Rush on December 4last year.

But race organisers are not resting on their laurels.

This year's event will take place on December 3and the aim is to get at least 6,000 Santas involved.

Sunrise Fund coordinator Penny Woods said: " We're delighted to have won the world record but we aren't leaving it there.

"We want this year's Santa Dash to be bigger and better so that we can secure our pole position.

"Everyone who takes part has lots of fun and it's agreat way to raise money for agood cause.

"This year we are also encouraging Santas to bring atoy for the ECHO Toy Appeal which can be donated on the day.

"All you have to do is pledge to raise a minimum £20 for the Sunrise Fund which supports Merseyside charities."

Its a big laugh, although I'm going 'for a good running time' this year. You will be fine, santa's got a big belly anyway

LIVERPOOL is set to go head to head with Las Vegas in a Santa Dash.
This year's charity event is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever.

Last December, 3,921 Santas donned their red suits and ran five kilometres, earning the stunt a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

The event, in aid of the ECHO's Sunrise Fund, will take place in December again and city Santas will be battling to keep their world record status.

The city's nearest Santa Dash rival was Newtown, Wales, but this year they have cancelled their event.

But there is still competition, for Las Vegas is organ-ising a similar event for mid-December.

So far the Santa Dash in Liverpool on December 3 has had 353 entries and 56 for the mini dash.

Regulars at the Newtown event have been entering the Liverpool dash and organisers have had entries from Wolverhampton, Shrewsbury and Dudley.

Sunrise Fund co-ordinator Penny Woods said: "It's never too early to start planning this year's Santa Dash.

"We want this year's event to be bigger and better than ever.

"Last year we raised more than £70,000 for the Sunrise Fund and this time around we want to collect evenmore cash.

"We can't rest on our laurels, though. I am sure that Las Vegas will be vying for our world record crown.

"We need as many people as possible to sign up to take part."

There is always a host of famous faces in the crowd and everyone enjoys taking part in the fun run.

THE gloves are off for this year’s Santa Dash.

Liverpool is going head to head with Las Vegas in a battle of the fun runs.

Today the ECHO is issuing a rallying cry to readers – help Liverpool keep its world record by signing up to take part.

Last December 3,921 Santas donned their red suits and ran five kilometres earning the stunt a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

In four months time the festive event, in aid of the ECHO's Sunrise Fund, will take place again.

But young pretender Las Vegas is getting in on the act with a Santa Dash of its own.

Sin City is organising a similar event for mid December.

So far the December 3 Santa Dash has had 353 entries and 56 for the mini dash.

We need to add to that figure to make sure Liverpool stays ahead of the pack.

We have come up with some things that put us ahead:

We all know that Santa is tubby but the average American man weighs 13 stone. We can use their obesity to our advantage.

It is too hot – it could be as warm as 58 degrees in Las Vegas during December – that’s no temperature to run around in.

Everyone is too busy gambling in the casinos to take part in a fun run.

Las Vegas is a Johnny-come -lately to Santa Dash. The ECHO-organised fun run has been going for years and attracts entrants from across the world.

You are not likely to bump into a sporting legend at the Las Vegas Santa Dash. At our fun run you could find yourself jogging alongside the likes of Kop legend Kenny Dalglish.

Sunrise Fund coordinator Penny Woods said: “We know Las Vegas will be giving us a run for our money. Now we need ECHO readers to help us keep our world record.

“Everyone who takes part has a great time and it is a fun way to raise money for local charities.

“It might be August, but it isn’t too early to pledge your support and start training and raising sponsorship money.”

For an application form for this year’s Santa Dash, contact Penny Woods on 0151-285 8452 or Alan Rothwell on 0151-427 7117.

It'd be nice to have a copy on line, maybe in a .txt format, so readers and members can print one out and send it on .
