UNIQUE film footage telling the story of Liverpool has been brought together for a birthday DVD.

The North West Film Archive at Manchester Metropolitan University has commissioned the DVD of archive film telling the story of Liverpool in the 20th century.

Made in partnership with Liverpool Record Office and with support from the Culture Company and Northwest Vision and Media, Liverpool on Film will have its premiere at the Odeon, London Road, on August 22.

Alice Morrison, chief executive of Northwest Vision and Media, said: "Last year, we awarded £50,000 to regional film heritage projects, such as Liverpool on Film, so it's wonderful to see the results.”

The DVD story, narrated by Roger Phillips, starts in 1897 with the earliest moving images of St George's Hall, the River Mersey, the Overhead Railway and horse-drawn trams on Lime Street.

It also features footage of the 1907 pageant in Wavertree Park to mark the city's 700th birthday, the New World Wonder Tunnel, construction of the cathedrals and the crowds of 1957 saying farewell to Liverpool’s last tram.

They are featured with three colour films shot for the council, Turn of the Tide, Liverpool Sounding and Rates for the Job, from the mid-1960s.

The £9.99 DVD is available from shops from August 22.

A limited number of free tickets are available for the 3pm Odeon screening on maureen@eventsinc.org.uk

I'm sure I saw that the whole DVD lasts about 15 mins if that.

I've got longer footage of Liverpool on youtube!
