Upper Duke Street 1977 Seel Street 1980 Duke Street 1971 After my last post about School Lane and Hanover Street, I received a mixed postbag. Whilst most agreed with me that Liverpool had lost a valuable chunk of its early history, others felt the Liverpool One development was a substantial improvement on the semi-dereliction that [...]

Fantastic pictures, I live in this neighbourhood and there are some buildings in Upper Duke Street which have been renovated and are occupied by businesses and are in my opinion, right up there with the finest buildings in the city.

However, I completely agree with what Colin is saying in that, letting one or two of a group of buildings fall by the wayside is a very dangerous and slippery slope.

The houses on Hanover Street in the previous SOL post could easily have been incorportated into the Liverpool One development in exactly the same way as the buildings on College Lane (rear of the Bluecoat) have been. They would have been typical of that part of the old city, adding plenty of character.

The old big issue office was taken over by a group of artists for about 6 months. Shame they were kicked out.

    Upper Duke St.
The glass-fronted shop just to the right of the lamp post in the middle of the picture:
I think that was my Uncle's antique shop in the early 70s. He moved there after his place next to the David Lewis theatre (Gt George Place?) was due for demolition.
