Jason Harborow to organise Ricky Hatton's biggest fight
    Apr 23 2008
by David Bartlett, Liverpool Daily Post

HE WAS tasked with delivering Liverpool’s showcase Capital of Culture year.

But now after Jason Harborow’s departure from his role of chief executive at the Culture Company, he is helping to put on one of the biggest events Manchester has ever seen.

He has swapped the ding-dong of Liverpool’s political scene to organise Europe’s biggest ever boxing fight – Ricky Hatton v Juan Lazcano.

Hatton will defend his IBO light-welterwight title in his return to the ring following December’s maiden defeat by American great Floyd Mayweather.

Since stepping down from Liverpool City Council in January with a £230,000 pay-off, Mr Harborow has set up an international consultancy from his new home in Murcia, in Spain.

    Ex-culture chief takes to airwaves

by David Bartlett, Liverpool Daily Post

FORMER Liverpool Culture Company chief executive is to make a surprise return to the public platform – becoming a radio presenter.

Jason Harborow will stepping in to Duncan Barkes slot tomorrow filling the 9am to noon slot on City Talk.

It comes a day after the Liverpool Daily Post revealed the international consultant has been helping to organise Ricky Hatton’s latest boxing fight. The Daily Post understands that a good performance tomorrow may lead to further presenting opportunities at the station, which started broadcasting earlier this year.

Richard Maddock, station director, said: “When Jason came on the breakfast show he impressed us with his honesty. It will give us a chance to see the real Jason Harborow.”

Talks begin over rising Captial of Culture costs
    Apr 26 2008
by David Bartlett, Liverpool Daily Post

HIGH-LEVEL talks are being held to discuss how Liverpool can meet the rising costs of paying for Capital of Culture year.

The Liverpool Daily Post can reveal costs have risen from £20m to around £22m, and last night creative director of the Culture Company Phil Redmond said he was considering putting on additional events to raise money.

The Culture Company is also talking to the Department for Culture Media and Sport, the Arts Council and sponsors about getting extra funding.

One high-cost event which was almost scrapped because of mounting costs was the spectacular mechanical mystery creature that will tour Liverpool in September.

The huge three to four day theatrical extravaganza, called La Machine, will be one of the biggest acts of street theatre the city has ever seen.

I think i've used it once.

Its a shame the culture company will be wound up. You'd think with all the trails and tribulations that have gone on over the last few years they'd be skilled up enough to become an entertainment consultancy busisness. Perhaps even make some money back for the city over the years to come?

Maybe not, too much of a sensible idea.
