    Default Liverpool Street in 1847

    Hello
On the Liverpool Catholic Burials on Ancestry there is a Mary Davison aged 31 years buried at St Anthony's on 13 June 1847. Can anyone decipher the name of the street where she lived for me? The first letter looks like an "S" going by the writing elsewhere on the page but could it be Gay or Joy?
    Thanks
    Pat

There was a Gay St at the start of Scotland Road but no residents are shown on my Kelly's edition other than the coal merchants Duffys.
Edit: I should have added that the reason no other residents are shown is because Kellys, sadly, did not list residents of 'Courts' which I would have thought was the majority in Liverpool upto the late 1950's
Hope this is a little help

    Hello Pat

Yes it could be "Gay Street" though if I could compare that street name another name that began with a capital "G" I could be more certain. Isn't working with period documents both fascinating and frustrating in equal measure?

    All the best

Default Gay Street, Foy Street etc

    Hello
Thanks to everyone who tried to decipher the street where Mary Davison lived in June 1847.
I was trying to work out if she was one of my Davison's but I think she may be the Mary Davison who was married to James Davison the Mariner in 1841 Census so she will not be mine. I have my James Davison in 1841.
    Thanks again
    Pat

According to St Anthony's database it's Gay St.

    --------------------------
Mary Davison was buried on Sunday 13th June 1847 and the fee was 14s 6d

Sunday seems like unusual day to have a burial and seems like a lot of money too?

Sunday in Victorian times was a day to attend church ie a holy day, you'll find the Viccy's were very strict not to work on this day.

    Some useless info.....
The rich and well off Victorian households woul pay a princley sum to have their own personal bible printed

---------- Post added at 05:14 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:08 PM ----------

    Bit more useless info.....

The 7 day clock was wound up on a tuesday to compensate for not having it wound on a sunday.

    Cheers.
