    Default Standish Street remembered

First the North side off Great Crosshall Street. It is said that St. Patrick preached from here before leaving for Ireland but a long time before this was taken by Harry Ainscough on 14th November 1966. On the left is the Borough Pub and next door to it on the same side, out of picture would have been what were known as the coffin blocks due to their tapered end shape. On the right is the now sadly demolished Holy Cross Church, replaced by new apartments. Holy Cross suffered in the bombing raids of the early 40s but was resurrected into a continuing thriving congregation in a much populated area. The pub in the middle was the Adlington Arms which was demolished in the mid 60s and where now stands Adlington and Bispham Heights.

Although all what is shown in the previous photo no longer exists, the street still does, albeit a cul de sac of bungalows overshadowed by student accommodation which towers above them from Marybone. The same cannot be said for the next view which is looking down Standish Street at a dog leg heading towards Dale Street. This was wiped away during the plans for the Eastbound flyover and is now a disused yard.

    Hi Ged,

I know you can't upload to your site for the time being but you still provide some great pics for us lucky Yoers.

Cheers Mart, and thankfully still get people sending me those great clear 60s pics via email like the one I forwarded to you and the boys this morning. I'll get round to putting these on too but i've a few more requests to sort out first and those buildings to get into of course
