    Default Spitfire

    Today in Williamson Square.

This is a replica Spitfire. 80% the size of the original. Pretty good replica.

    Does this plane fly?

They should have a Mustang plane on show, as it was assembled in Liverpool - the US and UK versions as well.

Great pics Tony. I'll pop down and see that.

Lindy, when you start getting as old as Tony, the wet patch in the bed is your alarm clock.

Interesting, it looks like a Supermarine Aircraft flying replica, probably with a V-8 engine.

    http://www.supermarineaircraft.com/fuse****e.htm

Are you sure about the 80% bit? there are other replicas at 75% - but the non-scale air intake above the spinner does make it look like the one in the second pic. down here...

    http://www.supermarineaircraft.com/About.htm

Any idea on the history of this specific one? Is it a retired prototype now used for display only?

    In Prescott, AZ a builder made a Jurca 100% Spitfire replica from wood - at a distance of 50 ft it's almost impossible to tell it's not a real Spitfire. It is powered by an Allison V-12 (US made Merlin) with a three bladed DC-3 prop. I'll see if I have a pic. of it I've taken a local air show. {not my pic, but this is it - http://www.airliners.net/photo/Jurca-MJ-100/1136397/M/ }

It's good these are put on display to preserve a part of the history of what kept Britain free during WWII for the young folks of today.

Its a shame the Spitfire flypast over the Mersey was cancelled though, due to high winds...

Allison did not make the RR Merlin under license in the USA. That was Packard. They made the engines that went into bombers and Mustangs. RR did the Spitfire engines as their engines were faster.

    Correct - I mixed up my V-12 manufacturers...ooops...

The Packard was a Merlin though...

Now... if you are going scale.... a neighbour built and is flying a Thunder Mustang - a 70% scale P-51D with a Falconer V-12 engine.

It has two seats with full controls, and is a tight squeeze in the back - this is me --

It was a real kick flying in the back seat, not quite a real P-51 put pretty d*&% close... The performance specifications are nearly identical to the original, helped by that custom V-12 engine.

I forgot the exterior shots - this link to a page on the planes maiden flight shows it well.

Just wondered if there was any particular reason, for scaling these aircraft down to 70/80%,especially if the engines are of a similar size? Is it just cost?
