Default Wavertree Garden Suburb Mark...Tennis Player

Quote Originally Posted by susieb View Post
Sorry that my first posting has to be a 'correction' of sorts, but Derek Hatton (not that Maria will know who he is) lived opposite the 61 bus stop (town direction) on Thingwall Road.

For the football enthusiasts among us, he lived a few doors down from Sammy Lee, an ex-St Francis Xavier College pupil, former Liverpool FC coach and now Bolton Wanderers manager.

Sammy Lee lived with his sister (and, presumably, her family) in a house to the left of the entrance to the Wavertree Garden Suburb Tennis and Bowling Club.

Celebrity trivia fans might like to know that Simon O'Brien, formerly of Radio Merseyside, used to live in Nook Rise and the unusually-named Dr Layth Bunni (formerly something 'big' in council circles and then Chief Executive of Liverpool Vision) used to live in Southway.

My source of information tells me the Suburb was also home to a tennis player called Mark who 'made the grade' in a modest way back in the 70s, early 80s, but we can't turn up his surname...
As I understand Simon O'Brien used to live on Thingwall Road the next house but one towards southway (which was about two or three doors away from Derek Hatton's house). With regard to Sammy Lee & his family I understood that they lived on Childwall Road and not Thingwall road?.....The Tennis player that you refer to was called 'Mark Farrell'

    Best regards

    Steve Parry
