Exclamation The Almshouses, Cambridge Street Liverpool

The Almshouses, Cambridge Street, 1910: LRO

An interesting building/ area. What's left of it? Is it still there? Does anyone have any info on it? What was it used for?

There is a nameplate on the first pic on the corner of the building that has a plaque saying, 'these almshouses were built by the Corporation of Liverpool in the year of 1787 in lieu of others formerly erected for certain charitable purposes.....'

Nothing's left of the building Kev. The site of the almshouses became the site of the Liverpool Maternity Hospital. As luck would have it, I posted a photo of the hospital in the September Picture of the Day series.

Well I never knew that. I have heard of those Alms houses and never knew their original location.

I had no idea it was by Oxford street.

    Default Mount Pleasant Almshouses

See 1848 map for location. It seems they were originally built in healthy open countryside in 1787. They housed 96 women in 48 tenements, each with 2 bedrooms and a living room. They were sold in 1911.

Excellent Taffy. I've tried to locate where the site was and put in ontop of a map of the area now.

Its a bit confusing but you can make it out...
