Champion Sports: I can remember it being a dress shop many moons ago - and a chandlers before then .. (not to be confused with the other chandlers a few doors away) .. ( I was only little at the time, but I remember looking at the dishes and pots & pans in the window). There was an off-Licence around the corner on Lower Breck we just used to call 'The Outdoor'.
I can remember all the shops on Breck rd & Townsend lane and also Priory rd. I could name most of them but I won't bore you all !
Remember when the Willow Bank was known as 'Ma Pates?' - a bit before my time but my dad and grandmother used to call it that.

Doctor, yes her son took over.
I remember the shop on the corner of Winchester was Evans the
watchmaker, a little general shop, banks the butchers, a cycle cum
radio shop, the jewelers/pawnshop, the chandlers, Diamond cafe,
champion sports and as you say the offie round the corner. Pretty
much the only origional shop left is Longstaffes.
It is real eyesore area now, a real shame

.. and what about Anne Rowleys - we used to save up our pocket money in her Christams club. I always remember the smell of cigars when you went in -Anne's husband Charlie used to smoke them.
I noticed not so long ago, the old shop frontage was exposed showing the old name 'Anne Rowleys' - a sad reminder of better days.
Townsend lane used to be thriving and you could do your weeks shopping there without having to go up Breck rd. There was every shop you could want including a sewing machine shop (by Longstaffs) - I think they may have been a tailors too. There were fruit shops, grocers, butchers, newsagents, chandlers, and as you say even a watchmakers & clock shop ( was the family name Coffee ?) there was a cafe, and a dry cleaners (Sunray dry cleaning).
How sad to see that lane in it's current depressing state. The soul gone out of it, and what remains is half derelict.

townsend Lane
Steveb those two photos of Townsend has really upset me. I didn,t realise it was so run down there now. I used to live up by Richmond Park, a wee bit further up towards town and still have friends and relatives in the area.
Some great pics there steveb. I like ordinary street shots, similar to what Ainscough done, it's not all about the grand and the great. I have over 700 pub shots here http://pic7.piczo.com/inacityliving/?g=41057337 with a 2nd page under construction, also others on industry and flats. Any you can help me on, especially if demolished or now under a change of use would be greatly appreciated.

Thanking you in anticipation Steve. Some street scenes of rows of shops say in Breck road, Smithdown, the High street etc that i've taken - they change hands or close down and re-open so often that they'll one day mean something to someone and there's some great architecture on even the most mundane looking buildings at first glance - a lot more character than the red brick stuff they throw up in uniform style these days.

Townsend lne by Lower Breck Rd
Years ago this used to be a great area, I remember what is nlow
the health club(closed) used to be an ice cream parlour.
This shot is on the corner of Toensend and Lower Breck.
The name was origionaly the Cockwell Inn, no seriously, but
they changed it for obvious reasons.
Who would have thought Townsend lane - once a thriving shopping area, would end up like this.

1st 2 pics this is derelict land where shops used to be. (we call it the 'field of dreams !!') .. and notice 'Pizza Delight !!' (what a delight it is too !!) 3rd pic is where the Cobblers & Sayers was; the next pic is where Thompsons the wallpaper & paints shop was - it was recently opened as a newsagents but closed after just a couple of months. The last pic is of the block which had grocers and fruitshop.

living in Speke I lived in Winchester Rd up until 1964, andTownsend
was a great road with every type of shop you would ever need.
The pic showing what used to be Sayers, you can just see a bit of
LLoyds chemist which was Mrs Jonses.
Yes, our mothers would get a weeks shopping on that lane without having to venture any further.
It's a very depressing sight now.
Shame the way they have let Breck road go.
Its always been a bit of a scruffy shopping area but at least the shops were open!
I have a clip of Jukebox Records from when it was on the corner.
I used to buy some of my records there.
When going for trainees it was Addidas Kick from champion sports and go and get a pastie and doughnut from sayers while waiting for either the 17,15 and 14 bus.The weather seemed warmer then too.
