Default UNSEEN AND UNPUBLISHED - LISTER DRIVE - 21ST AUGUST 1967

Lister Drive from Green Lane as seen on 21/8/67. Once a hive of activity with a Primary School, Public Library, donated by benefactor Andrew Carnegie and opened in 1905, a public swimming baths (1904) and major power station, it is now sadly a shadow of its former self.

Only the baths survives as a functioning building, acting as a fisheries and pet centre with some original features still on view. Facing this are the allotments which stretch right across to the rear of the Grade II listed former Seamans Orphanage (1874 by Alfred Waterhouse) which fronts onto Newsham Park. You will just see the swings on the childrens playground on the right of the 2nd photo.

Photos from the LRO. Scrollbar required at the foot of the post to see the photos in full.

An area I'm very familiar with, great to see its former glory. I hope that what is left is kept!

I went to the school 1942 to 45 and used the library a lot and the baths up to about 1950. The space opposite the school over to Brainerd St was used as a dump for bricks from bombed buildings at the time. In November 1940 the Luftewafer flew over and took an aerial photo of the area with the power station as a target. There is a copy in the record office. alan

Thanks everyone. It's great when you open the LRO folders wondering what will be there and gems like this emerge. Makes it all worthwhile. My foray Saturday gone was very fruitful too as they just let me look through the whole folders and I copied 322 pics. Loads of the Everton slum clearance area of Heyworth Street and the streets off it such as Amos st and Cochrane St.

Great pictures Ged, thanks for all your work. I went to Lister Drive school in the late 50's,when we moved from Orient St off Heyworth St. At playtime I used to be fascinated with the activity going on at the power station.Went to the baths every Saturday afternoon for a while, remember the rush to get changed and be the first to jump in the pool (always got beat to it by some other kid though).Loved going to the library too,why is it now derelict? such a shame. When the power station chimney's were being demolished I seem to remember one of the demolition men got killed, can't be too sure about it though.Between the allotments and Green Lane there used to be an estate of Prefabs.Totally different world then compared to today. Thanks again mate.

Spent a lot of time in the baths when we were kids.A penny for the Brilcream machine after a 'swim',then walk up to the bakery at Lower Breck Rd. for a 1d Hovis.
The power station had a BIG goat that lived next to the railway line.We would go under the bridge, aka Donkeys Hill, and chuck stones at it.
Total waste of time, never hit it and I still can't swim.

Ged, are the photos of Amos Street, different to the already published photos. If they are, what are the reference numbers, as I have a appointment at the LRO tomorrow.

    Stan.
