It's always a case of the shoe
being on the other foot. . .

You didn't mention my leg
fracture in replying
to our friends' bright news
of their bonny first grandchild,

made no reference to my leg
pain. Instead you oohed, ahed,
said, "Send us photographs!"

When I described my fall
down the black iced steps,
my internet buddy replied, "Sorry
to hear that. . . got photos?"

If sympathy is what you seek
don't shoot yourself or slip
the saintly too pounce on the weak
and those empathetic quip

do yourself the favour
and laugh-off your mishap
don't let the smarty savour
be the bravest little chap

it's not that your pal's a monster
when he fails to sympathise
he's just a lucky blighter
your equal, unwise wise

here, plainly, is the moral of the tale
please don't reproof your mate
he is but a rueful, archetypal male
