    Default Rocket Air Raid Shelter

Anyone know anything about this shelter? Or where it stood?

It was hit 3rd May 1941. Many died.

The Rocket air raid shelter was on a triangular piece of land between Oakvale Church and the Rocket flyover, close to The Gardener's Arms pub at the junction of Broadgreen Road/ Edge Lane Drive.

Any pics of the area then?

'The Green' housing estate containing flats were built on it in the 1950s, it is still there now, now long renovated as I got pics for my site.

They built these E Type shelters underground on open Ground. So anybody got an old map? we need to look for open ground on one?

I have found a story saying many of the victims had come out of a local dance hall.

Spike, go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ put in L13 5SF and select the Gardeners Arms. Select the 1951-52 map and you'll see triangular shaped land where it stood which has flats built on it today that face on to Edge Lane Drive and Queens Drive.

Spike, I presume that it's the recent Echo story that brought this to your attention. It's also mention here http://www.caringonthehomefront.org....thleen-thomas/ and states that it was May 1941 when the shelter received a direct hit.

In fact, nail that down as the 3rd May that it was bombed (Parkes, Evelyn and Parry, John) - http://www.liverpoolatwar.co.uk/p.html

    Spike,

I'm sure the one I heard of was nearer to the end of the M62, towards Thomas Lane ( could be wrong though ), near Hunters site.
There is apparently a tree standing over the site, I'm sure it was the Bowring park Road area !
I've emailed my source, I'll ring him later if you don't ! !

I have given the Shelter its own page on the Website. Ive uploaded details of 29 people who died after the shelter was bombed.

Im going to go along for some photos when I can be sure of the location.

Any info or pics would be most welcome. The page will get more added to it in time.

Brilliant Spike - so sad, particularly the ages of the kids. I had no idea about this direct hit.

Thanks Spike such an interesting post.

Do you have any information on Ash Grove, Wavertree which took a direct bomb?

I have put the deaths on the website http://liverpoolremembrance.weebly.c...ings-1940.html

Scroll down to 29th November. It was called Ashfield. It was hit in the same raid that hit Durning Road. I have some newspaper details for it but have not added them yet.

Thanks Spike, the Knowles family are related on my dad's side of the family. I saw them on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site.

Very nice to see them on your site, keep up your sterling work!

Another lady contacted me who is related to them.

Did you ever see the story about them in the Echo? I have it, with pics of some of them.
