Losing Mamie

The way we'll remember her, curled up
on our pastel bedcover: perky tabby
who once sailed out of our third floor
window and landed in the flowerbed
below, returned to us by a passerby.
She remained rambunctious until near
the last, when a brain lesion disabled her
front legs: tragic toll on a sweet soul;
you cradled her in your shoulder
as I drove through Baltimore
snow flurries to the waiting vet's
tender euthanizing injection.
