Hi Johnny, with the greatest respect I'd say he is highlighting their plight rather than exploiting it.

For instance it's got me thinking more about the homeless as, to my shame, I never really did before.

There is a place for social realism to show the plight of the homeless. Gerard is doing a good service, at no financial gain to himself, in highlighting the problem of the homeless. Morning and evening the cab I ride in Washington, D.C. to and from Union Station drives past a homeless shelter. It's always depressing and moving for me to see the homeless there with their bags of belongings. More of us should see these sights. So carry on with the good work, Gerard.

    All the best

Total rubbish. The photos draw attention to the plight of many.
Who knows it may help ease the situation, which has long needed
looking at. A lot of so called,"soup kitchens", are run by volunteers
with little or no income, so anything that helps is welcome.
    Good on you Gerard

    Thank you Chris...

I knew one of the homeless lads as I meet them out and about..
I asked Carol, the nurse from the Royal Hospital who invited me..
could I give the lad in question a fiver... she said no as he'd just buy ale with it..

It was the most humbling experience of my Life Chris last night..
... I sat with them all and eat with them and had a laugh with them..

    Thanks again mate..

    [B]Gerard,
It's all too often and too convenient for us to forget how lucky we are not to suffer being homeless, great work those volunteers put in.
Just keep clicking that shutter, if idiots don't appreciate what you show tough s..t, you've stated before that you ask permission from your subjects.

Great photos Gerard, those who think we should hide these poor people or shy away from doing something to help, by highlighting their plight, as Gerard has done, should be ashamed. We may never know why they are homeless, but I think by having them on the net, relatives or old friends who have lost touch may well try to help someone that they know. It has been said, to our eternal shame, we forget about them and take little interest, Glad Gerard is !!

    Wonderful verse there Mart mate,

What Gerrard has failed to do by putting these photographs on the net is adding there names, age , where do they originate from ?, why are they here ?, how does family and friends get in touch?, contact details?, how can we help ?

Would you like to know where they sleep at night as well, johnny ?
What about where the soup kitchen is ?..
shall I plaster that all over the Internet ?

I'm a photographer.. not an MP...
its not for me to tell you how to help homeless people..
    Use your head... I did.

    Hope that helps johnny..

    Best wishes..

Cartier-Bresson was faced with similar criticism when he first took his camera out into the streets of Paris... and who's to say that his motives were entirely free from considering how his images would further his own career... But personally I'm glad that, whatever his motivation, he did not shy away from recording them... and in the process started the whole social-realist movement in photography. It's not for me to judge Gerard's motives, but I can recognise that his contributions play a valuable part in reminding us of that humanistic genre. I'm equally sure that, on being faced with such powerful images, some may feel they are being faced with an invitation to voyeurism...... But perhaps that says as much about them as it does about the images?

However, I can't help wondering whether this means that Gerard is abandoning his excellent coverage of 'arty-farty events type photography'? - I thought he was dedicated to covering all human life... Perhaps he's had a Damascene moment?... If so, good on him!

    @ johnny blue.. photos removed..

    Hello johnny..

I asked 2 weeks ago in post 421 would you tell me your real name so I could add
it to the photo I took of you at St Georges Church... I got no reply..

I've answered your questions about Liverpools homeless..
    I've had no reply...
(If you have replied..my apologies.. I cant find any reply from you.)

I offered the photos taken that day for free.. I've had no reply..

You have not commented on the photos I took of you one way or another..
you have not said thanks... you have not clicked the 'Like' button thing..

You dont have to do any of that of course johnny..
it does not bother me one way or another...

But I'm wondering by the lack or replys, have I done something to offend you.. ?

If I have johnny then I apologise... I've removed your photos from post 421..
    and from my website...

If anybody else wants their photos removing from that day then please..
    tell me..I'll remove them....

From now on... if I meet any of you at an event and you want your photo taking..
let me know.. I'd be pleased to take your photograph..
Dont be offended though folks please if I dont offer to take your photograph while taking photos around you....

Just ask...I'd be made up to..

    Thanks all...

Sad, but important photo's of the times. Could be any large city but it's Liverrpool here and now. Ralph McTell's "Streets of London" tells the story better than I can, When will we learn that capitalism is flawed without a socialist conscience? We live and enjoy the benefits of capitalism, these poor buggers are left by the wayside.
Thanks, Gerard, for drawing our attention to their lives, as many have done before,
Best wishes yourself and to all at the shelter,
    Chas
