    Default Byrom Terrace, 1933

The media’s fascination with Liverpool is not a recent phenomenon. It used to really annoy me back in the 1980s when London-based newspapers continually featured pictures of Liverpool to illustrate urban deprivation in Britain. I particularly remember the Sunday Times leading with a photograph of the Pier Head shot from Birkenhead. In the foreground was [...]

I don't know where you keep getting the pics Colin as I thought I had everything out of the LRO on my old area but long may you keep finding them. One of those kids could be the lad who would later be my dad. He would have been 13 in 1933 and lived around the corner from there.

Reading Street, top pic 1936,bottom 1957 with the last families moving out.
Notice the upright timber supports keeping the landings up in the later pic, these were put in after a mother and child were injured when the landing collapsed being supported by only wrought iron angles
The wooden supports were made of greenheart wood so when we youngsters slid down them instead of using the stairs,we would sometimes get a splinter which would require a visit to Stanley Hospital for an injection.

These terraces remind me of photographs/ paintings of old galleried Inns. This is the George, one of the last surviving examples, off Borough High Street, Southwark, London.
