    Default Go Superlambananas!

Hope Students at Everton hard at work

    Go Superlambananas!

Artists from all over the region are being invited to submit designs for quite possibly the most quirky and vibrant event being held throughout Capital of Culture year.

With 2008 fast approaching, Go Superlambananas is also possibly the most ambitious and all encompassing project to yet to be announced and the organisers are calling for contributions from Birkenhead to Bootle.

Running from June to September, Wild In Art, together with Liverpool Hope University and the City Council, are asking for local artists to become involved in placing over 100 highly decorated versions of the iconic statue in Liverpool, to form a trail through the city streets and boroughs as a demonstration of the region’s artistic talent and bursaries will be available for designing and creating the army of Superlambananas.

Statues will form a trail through city streets

‘We wanted to come up with something in which people could use their imaginations, reflect the culture of the area and its sense of fun. Using this fabulous icon created by Japanese artist Taro Chiezo as a canvas is a great way of doing all that,’ said Charlie Langhorne of Wild In Art and organiser of Manchester’s memorable Cow Parade.

‘We want all forms of art involved, not just traditional paintings, whether professional or amateur, and across the spectrum. Poets, photographers, authors, new media … the whole lot, but using whatever they think will work on a three-dimensional canvas. We really want to reflect the area’s culture, vitality and humour. Let’s get these things flying, dancing and singing. It’s a really exciting project and has already caught people’s imagination.’

Professor Bill Chambers of Liverpool Hope Cornerstone Campus in Everton said: ‘My aim is to show just how exciting, inventive and colourful Liverpool can be and this is the perfect project for us to show those things.
Everybody knows what the Superlambanana is and where it comes from, so what we want to do is take the project to local schools and get them involved as well, prior The Big Hope Youth Conference taking place from June 4 to June 11, next year.

The deadline for designs to be submitted is mid-February, so there is plenty of time for artists to get their thinking caps on and to make this one of the most memorable events of Capital of Culture year.’
