A LIVERPOOL priest has been appointed honorary chaplain to the Queen.

Monsignor Stephen Alker MBE, 53, already the Principal Roman Catholic Chaplain for the Army, was born in the city and worked as an assistant priest at the Metropolitan Cathedral.

He joined the Territorial Army in 1981 as chaplain to 208 (Merseyside) and then the Regular Army in 1983.

He has served in Germany, Northern Ireland, Cyprus, Australia, Bosnia and various locations within Great Britain.

He is the first Liverpool priest to be appointed to be honorary chaplain to the Queen.

He said: “Over my 25 years as a chaplain, it’s a wonderful privilege to serve so many officers, soldiers and their families and to be a presence of God to them in so many different ways.”
