    Arrow Ammunition bunkers,Kirkby,Oct 10.

This is located just outside Kirkby to be honest....There are 9 main buildings with smaller buildings dotted around, they are connected by concrete roads.

All the buildings basically look the same, sadly there isnt much left.

The ammunition bunker held two functional requirements; to protect the ammunition from outside attack, but equally to protect the base itself from the forces of the potentially volatile weapons. For this reason a secondary blast wall was built to contain any explosions from escaping and damaging other buildings.

Used briefly during WWII for the storage of bombs and artillery, the bunkers have found uses today as wine cellars or chemical storage for industry.

thanks for that, great pics, i grew up in kirkby and remember as a kid we used to go to a place just outside the trading estate as it was known, we called the place the airplane dump, there were lots and lots of old airplanes with no wings dumped there, one on top of another

we used to climb inside the cockpits and pretend to be fighter pilots, some still had lots of instruments in them and even old battered headgear, if i remember right there were even cockpits of old spitfires

does anyone else remember this? wish i stripped the spitfires, would be having a lot of fun on ebay now

Surprised for "enviromental" reasons or for "why hasn't it been stolen yet" reasons?......
