Could someone please check a Kellys for the 1932-1937 period and tell me the full name of S.E. Jones who ran the stationers and sub-post office in Myers Road East, Crosby (should be number 70). He's in the telephone directories as S.E. Jones for 1932-1938, but he's not there in Kelly's for 1938.

He's not in the 1936 directory.
I couldn't see anything in the Alphabetical section, either.

Thanks for the prompt response Philip. Was there anyone listed at that Sub-Post Office in 1936?

Many thanks Philip. In 1938 it's Mrs Eliz. Williams - presumably the same person as the one you found in 1936. Yet the contemporary phone books show S.E. Jones as the subscriber for that business throughout that period. Strange.

The Samuel Ernest Jones that I am interested in lived round the corner from Myers Road East at 24 Caithness Drive. He is listed there in Kelly's 1938 and described as a sales manager. Interestingly the phonebook listing for that address from 1937 to 1950 is in the name of his son who was just 21 in 1937.

I suspect phone books weren't as up to date as directories, or amended as often.
(Where are these phone boooks, BTW?).

21 of course, was the age of majority.

In 1936, 22 Caithness Drive is listed, after which "Westland" has no number.
It was occupied by Robinson Wm. who. fruitr.

Thanks again Philip for the 1936 info. To answer your question I am accessing phone book images 1880-1984 via my Ancestry.co.uk subscription. It's a fantastic resource but searching for Joneses isn't terribly easy!
