    Hi Norm, one of my ancestors was a shipping commission agent in the 19th century. I think he was probably a shipping agent or worked for one.

    I have just googled the following,

    The description is failry broad but they acted as agents for other parties in this way.

    If Mr A was in London but wanted to import tea, for instance, in Bristol he would want his interests looked after and would employ an agent to do this for him locally in return for a fee or commission. In this way he did not need to be in Bristol but was not at the mercy of local dock workers and shipping agents who might rip him off.

    The term applied to all kinds of work, not just shipping, but was simply the employment of a local agent to look after your interests.

    hi Kim there was no Joseph listed but there was a Hackett J T & co disinfectant manafacturers 21 & 23 Cockspur St, cent. 1522

    Hi there, response to Lady (Jacky). If you put the surname Ansboro into Familysearch it comes up on the 1881 census all in York (shire presumably) mostly born Bradford, a couple born Ireland. Hope this helps? Flower

    They don't cover Leslie St. in the 1938 edition either, they just have it being off Hyslop St.

    Hi If your still looking up for people Im searching for someone called ? J Adam(s) address 13 Enid Street Liverpool

    My grandad had this address on the vack of an old photo, cutting a long tory hort my grandad stole someones identity and Im trying to trace the address to ee if I can find anyone that fits.

    or indeed any Oakes in Garston from 1871 - but especially 10 Banks Rd...were there any there in 1938 ?....pretty certain they would be there in 1881 and 1911.....thanks again....allan
