    Default Netherfield Road 1927

I have deliberately avoided selecting photographs from well-known sources such as the City Engineer’s Collection in the Liverpool Record Office. Today’s selection does come courtesy of LRO but I hope I can add an additional dimension to what is my favourite photograph in the whole CE archive. The role of the CE photographers was to document [...]

Fantastic. My Nan is from Amos Street in Everton, she tells me she used to walk Netherfield Road all the way to West Derby Road for a loaf of bread with her brother in his pram! The things we take for granted nowadays!

    Thanks for sharing.

Photo 2. L. Barker's shop window:- underneath the sign "Home Made Ices" there's another sign that says what looks like....

    "We Give Blue Trading Stamps"

I was wondering whether this was similar to Green Shield Stamps?

    ----

Photo 4. The Landing closeup. Notice the chalked squares and numbers on the door, is this part of some children's game?

    Thanks,

Ar ay,Kev its a ruddy great hole and dated 1848 how do yer expect us to say yes? but there was a sandstone quarry on everton so I summise this will be it? as this is why most the houses had sandstone column' and baywindows supports ect,ect as it was cheaper to dig locally than transport/

The quarry was further north Kev. Here's one I prepared earlier.

They were just about to lay-out "John Street" on the map. But they must have mixed the disciples up, as it was later renamed "Mark Street".

Edit: see Ged's post #14 for an existing photo of the remaining quarry walls, around Mark Street.

From Everton Valley to the far end of Nethy Road north quarry and from Nethy road to St Domingo road was all Sandstone earth,at some stage along Nethy road you could see the sandstone shelfs and most of it was covered by brick built walls around certain buildings ie John Baggots,Vic Settlement,Anne Fowlers,I think the sandstone that was showing was round about Shaw street park area?

Google Street view shows some Sandstone even as far as the South of Nethy at the road side.

The steep quarry walls are still there at Mark Street, I showed Mart them earlier this year, a little housing estate has been built in the void. Cobbs Quarry higher up on St Domingo road supplied the clinker used on John Brodies prefabricated flats in Eldon st. This later became the council depot.
