    Default Breck Road 1900

The Thistle, Breck Road Unknown house interior c1890 Most of us who collects photographs finish up with family albums and family photographs which offer a tantalising glimpse of the past – even if the people and location are often not known. I have dozens of photographs ranging from WW1 soldiers, young children in prams, proud shopkeepers outside [...]

    Hi Spike,

I will try and scan a few in for you. Might take a day or so to get them done if you don't mind waiting.

As usual, great pic's Colin! I vaguely remember going into some houses that looked like that, when I was a kid,as I used to get collared by some old girls to get them snuff, etc, from the local shops!

    Thanks Colin,

Unknown House photo - the Victorians weren't into minimalism were they?

There's a zone for pictures and a zone for chairs, separated by a dado and contrasting wallpapers. They packed every square-inch they had in those days. She's probably having a sit down, after dusting that lot in the morning?

I wonder who started the trend of putting plates on the wall? Functional requirement, decoration, or maybe both?

Fantastic. I would have thought it wouldn't have take too long for our more clued members to find out what The Thistle was.

It was a 'High Class A......." according what's on the windows. BARBERS?

I didn't realise at first that the lady in front of the shop holding a large Scottie dog on her lap .... or is it just her dress and/or cardigan or some other garment?

It might appear to me that is a former shop given the way the lettering has been let go rather than that "The Thistle", whatever it was, might have been still in business when the photograph was taken.

Excellent photos Colin. Unknown house interior bears a slight resemblance to Arrangement in Grey and Black: The Artist's Mother by Whistler.

The first of an old lady and dog outside The Thistle. What was it? It says high class but the only clues are pots of aspidistras in one window and a few bottles in the other.
    Two different shops there Colin.

The one with the plants in the window might have been a Barber or Laundrette? it having the 'A' on the far window. but then again..."High Class Cafe","High Class Tailor".....Hmm! since its called "The Thistle" I'll go for Cafe.
The one with the bottles...now then these are SODA water bottles so what type of shop sold Soda water?

    Yes, that's right.
I worked in Chemist shops and we used to sell soda water. The customer would return the used siphons.
That was in the 1970s -- ( before anyone says I was working in Ye Olde Apothecary, ha,ha)
