    Default Mother (CTG)

    Mother

My mother lies sedated in hospice care and I can't make out what she's saying. Later she sleeps soundly and I don't disturb her. The room is quiet with subdued lighting and rain spatters on the window. What is she thinking about? Past times in Liverpool perhaps... the war when she met my father, a physiotherapist with the Royal Air Force. She served in the ATS, helped monitor the German bombers coming to rain bombs on the docks of Merseyside. The drone of the raiders' Heinkels.

Nice sentiment Chris, my mum had a similar role in the war.

    Thanks,

Hello Mart, Dazza, Naked Lilac and Spike

Thank you each for your kind comments and thoughts. I appreciate the best wishes at this difficult time. I am an only child so it makes the burden even greater.

    Thanks Chris,

You have lots of friends here on Yo, and we are all here for you. We also appreciate how difficult it must be for you right now. Your mum can be very proud.

Thanks again, Daz. Here's another one:

    Not About Death

This poem is not about death,
the slow breath of the sedated woman,
    her reddened lips sunken because
someone lost her dentures, her son

    pacing the worn wall-to-wall carpet
in the peaceful midnight common room,
deciding not to drink another cup of black
coffee from the pot steaming next to the TV

as it broadcasts another episode of unreality.

Hi Chris, having just lost my Father to dementia, I know exactly how you are feeling. Its an unreal state of mind losing a parent, my thoughts are with you and your family.

Thanks for your kind messages and thoughts, Kathy and burkhilly. Sorry to hear about your Dad, Kath. Yes it is... sad, sad, sad, but remember the good times and when they were well.

    Mama Loved Mussels

As a main meal that is. A dozen green lip mussels on the half shell. For me, maybe, as a snack or a first course, rarely. Mama tucked into a bowl of the blue-black shellfish at Bertha's Dining Room in Fells Point, Baltimore. Not for her Mussels Casino, Mussels Marinara di Amore, Mussels in Curry Cream Sauce, or Southern California Cioppino with 1 pound of mussels, cleaned and debearded.
