John Peel Day - Oct 13th

A year ago, the music world lost one of its most influential figures, the much adored and respected John Peel. On Thursday 13th October BBC Radio One has organised 'John Peel Day', a celebration of John's outstanding contribution to music.

On Thursday 13th October, people all across the world have been urged to celebrate John's life in the only way he would have liked- by organising gigs across the country and enjoying music. Over 300 gigs have been organised around the country and no doubt 'Teenage Kicks' will be the most played song on the day!

It is now a year since the music world lost one of its most influential figures- the much adored and respected John Peel. John's death came as a great shock to everybody, and the whole music world was united in grieving for one of the most important figureheads in music.

John was the only DJ left at Radio One who had been with the station since its launch back in 1967. Not only was he at the forefront of Rock & Punk in the 70's, but during the 80's he was one of the first DJs ever to play Hip Hop on national radio and champion Reggae. In the 90's, he supported every possible sub-genre of dance music from Techno, Drum n Bass, Breakcore, Electronica or the highly unfashionable Happy Hardcore.

When he died, the outpouring of grief was from the whole music world.

BBC Radio One will be broadcasting live from Heaven 'n' Hell at Bar Fresa in Fleet Street where Kid 606, Drop The Lime, Furness and Venom will be playing.

    Drop The Lime

To mark the day numerous events are taking place across Merseyside on October 13th. Peel favourite Half Man Half Biscuit will be playing at Liverpool Carling Academy.

Ian McNabb and Echo and The Bunnymen's Will Seargant will play a special 'Acoustica Peel Night' at 3345 Parr Street.

At the newly opened Las Vegas venue Cranebuilders and Ella Guru will play while The Cavern plays host to Bingowongs, Wekindred, Hoboheist, an P Gods of Rock.

Liverpool's Barfly has a Mixed Bag John Peel Special with live performances from Mugstar and BBC Radio Merseyside DJ's Joe Shooman an Roger Hill.

In Southport DJ's at The New Coronet Bar will be playing classic Festive 50 and Peel Session tracks.

To celebrate John Peel's love of football and all things Liverpool FC some of Liverpool's most famous musicians will be playing a five a side tournament on October 13th. Amongst the teams competing for the John Peel Memorial Trophy will be teams representing The Farm, The La's, Shack and Paul McCartney's LIPA. John's son Tom will also be entering a team Ravenscroft Stanley. The games will be played at Liverpool FC's Academy in Kirkby. All the money raised will be donated to the Kariandusi School Trust of which John Peel was a patron.

If you aren't in the city on October 13th but would still like to be part of the celebration, you can get your ‘Teenage Alterkicks’ at the Dry Bar’s John Peel tribute!

On 11th October, some hot signed bands will be taking to the stage to support the Dry Bar’s tribute to the legendary Radio One DJ, John Peel.

The event which will take place at the Carling Academy from 6pm onwards is part of a series of events hosted by the Dry Bar for 14-18 year olds and will showcase signed bands and young local music talent.

Dry Bar acts confirmed are Karl McCann, The Daytona’s, Rochelle McLean, Alien Babies / White Rabbit and Threadbares. Alongside the young musicians will be special guests The Cranebuilders who featured on John Peel Sessions, The Alterkicks, Pale Face Princess and the 747’s (TBC).

Peel, Floyd, Ozzy Enter UK Hall Of Fame

Last night saw the second annual induction ceremony for the UK Music Hall Of Fame as, amongst others, New Order, John Peel and Black Sabbath joined Elvis, Madonna and the Beatles on the list of inductees.

Moving from the Hackney Empire to the opulent setting of London’s Alexandra Palace, last night (November 17) Dermot O’Leary presented the 2005 UK Music Hall Of Fame induction ceremony which saw performances from new inductees New Order, Black Sabbath and Eurythmics while a host of younger stars paid tribute to the legends.

The Pretenders welcomed The Kinks into the Hall Of Fame with a cover of the classic ‘Waterloo Sunset’, while a supergroup featuring Guns ‘n’ Roses guitarist Slash, Steve Winwood and original Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell paid tribute to the late Jimi Hendrix.

Amongst those propping up the bar in the VIP area included such luminaries as Woody Harrelson, Damon Albarn, Shaun Ryder, Sir Bob Geldof, Pete Townsend, The Buzzcocks and the man who growled his way through Aretha Franklin’s ‘Respect’: Jamie ‘Gurning Jazz Hobbit' Cullum

Also on the bill was a performance by another supergroup featured on the forthcoming Amnesty International charity single ‘Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve)?’ including New Order’s Peter Hook, The Buzzcocks and various members of The Datsuns, El Presidente and friends.

The track closed the show as a tribute to the late DJ John Peel, this year’s non-musician inductee.

The whole show airs tonight (November 17) on Channel 4 at 9pm.

The full list of 2005 inductees that now join – deep breath – Elvis, The Beatles, Queen, Cliff and The Shadows, Michael Jackson, U2, Bob Marley, Robbie Williams, and The Rolling Stones, are as follows:

    New Order / Joy Division
    Ozzy Osbourne / Black Sabbath
    Eurythmics
    Aretha Franklin
    The Kinks
    The Who
    Pink Floyd
    Jimi Hendrix

Default DJ Peel tribute single goes on sale

A tribute single to the late DJ John Peel is set to hit the shops.

Contributors include Sir Elton John, Robert Plant, Roger Daltrey, David Gilmour and Peter Hook.

The song, a version of the Buzzcocks' Ever Fallen in Love, will raise funds for Amnesty International, one of Peel's favourite charities.

Newer names, such as The Futureheads, El Presidente, and The Datsuns also participated.

All the artists taking part were championed or admired by Peel during his career.

The single also features the song's original creator Pete Shelley.

It is the brainchild of Peel's son, Tom Ravenscroft.

It features vocal and piano by Sir Elton, rhythm guitar by Gilmour and bass guitar by Hook of New Order.

Peel died on October 25 last year while on holiday in Peru.

New Order recently headlined a tribute gig as part of John Peel Day, which was held exactly one year after the DJ's last Radio 1 show.

    The real Peel

Ajax Scott finds shyness and insecurity to go with John Peel's passion for music in his autobiography, Margrave of the Marshes

    Saturday December 24, 2005
    The Guardian

    Margrave of the Marshes
by John Peel and Sheila Ravenscroft
    329pp, Bantam, £18.99

The Latin master who wrote the report for John Ravenscroft's final term at Shrewsbury public school summed him up succinctly: "cheerfully incompetent". It was a description that delighted the young Ravenscroft (if not his father), and indeed one that he might have outwardly relished throughout much of his professional career, as he seemingly effortlessly made the journey from discharged army gunner to failed Dallas cotton trader to part-time radio DJ and, ultimately, one of the UK's most-loved broadcasters.

That description was even reflected years later on the badge a fan created for him bearing the slogan "Right Time, Right Place, Wrong Speed" in homage to the frequency with which he played records at 33rpm rather than 45. And yet his skill was to combine that cheerful incompetence with a passion, professionalism and dedication to his vocation that made him arguably one of the most important radio broadcasters of the 20th century. John Peel was nothing if not contradictory.

All these qualities are stamped throughout Margrave of the Marshes, the autobiography he started writing before his sudden death in October last year. Completed by Sheila, his wife of 30 years, and their sons, it has now become one of the year's bestsellers.

    A fantastic man.
My lad's band The Conflict Theory done a John Peel Night gig in Bedford last year.
    http://www.bedsbucksherts.org.uk/esquires/index.html
    Bedford Metal review
"Possibly my favourite band of the night the five piece THE CONFLICT THEORY, that's two theories on the same bill a thinking mans gig for the Jon Peel night in Bedford in which the band respectfully gave a call out to the man himself.
The band had such a great sound with their twin guitar attack being used to the fullest and what an amazing front man singer, the way he held the audience with his energetic on stage delivery and strong well sung vocals. I thought the songs had a slight danger of sounding all the same, although that's only a minor quibble as the material that they do have is of a good sounding great quality, impeccably performed by their front man show master."

DJ Peel leaves £1.8m and 25,000 records
    Peter Zimonjic

THE broadcaster John Peel left more than £1.8m to his family in an

estate that includes one of Britain’s largest and most diverse album collections.

The Liverpool-born DJ’s legacy to his widow Sheila Ravenscroft

includes 25,000 vinyl records and thousands of CDs, mainly stored in outbuildings at his house in Great Finborough, Suffolk.

    Peel died suddenly at

the age of 65 from a heart attack in October 2004 while on a trekking holiday in Peru.

His four children share £263,000 of the £1,825,386, reduced to

£1,752,633 after liabilities were cleared. The rest of the estate was left to Ravenscroft.

Peel’s album collection has yet to be catalogued but the

broadcaster was famous for his interest in unknown and unusual musical acts from a broad range of backgrounds and for unusual recordings by famous artists.

He was at the forefront of developing trends and fostering new talent during his 40-year career and was among the first to recognise bands such as

Pink Floyd, Tim Buckley, Joy Division, Blur, Jimi Hendrix and Pulp among others.

Peel, who was Radio 1’s longest serving DJ, did not leave any

instructions in his will as to what should be done with the albums.

The clause in his will dealing with the collection simply states with respect to

his wife: “I ask her (but without imposing any binding obligation) to give effect to any wishes of mine which may come to her attention as to their

    disposal.”

The will did say that it was his wish to be buried in the churchyard at Great Finborough, a wish his family carried out.

    The will

did not say what he wanted on his gravestone, but in 2001 he said he wanted it engraved with his name and the words: “Teenage dreams, so hard to beat”, a

lyric from his favourite track, Teenage Kicks, by the Undertones.

    Sorry for not

answering sooner Paul. I haven't much chance to surf through the forum these past few days.

The Conflict Theory had loads of gigs, but they've

split up now. Their Myspace site is still running, including a couple of very early tracks http://www.myspace.com/theconflicttheory . Paul wanted

to get back on lead guitar again, so and him and fellow guitarist, Aaron have formed a new band called Vs Akira. They're in rehearsals, but are still

looking for someone on vocals. They've just started up a new Myspace site http://www.myspace.com/vsakira . They'll have no problem with gigs

locally as they are well known in the area and Paul promotes local band, so he knows all the local venues. His Myspace Promotion site FTP Promotions is over

    at http://www.myspace.com/ftppromo

    Just checked it and it

works fine for me Paul. I've had problems in the past, but don't know whether it's my ISP or Myspace's server playing up.

Angry We should be in for these.

    'No decision' over Peel records

Peel died on 25 October 2004 while on holiday in

    Peru
A decision has yet to be made about what will happen to John Peel's huge library of records, tapes and CDs, the late DJ's family has said.
    His

daughter Alexandra said: "We've not had any discussions about what is going to happen to the collection in the long term. For now it will stay at home."

Liverpool-born Peel's collection is estimated to have 25,000 vinyl albums.

It was speculated that the British Library would take it, but it

has remained at his Suffolk home.

A spokesman for the British Library declined to say whether officials had been involved in negotiations about the

future of the Peel music archive.

    'Realistic'

The institution claims it is "the premier public research facility for pop music in the UK".

The collection was left to Peel's wife Sheila as part of his estate, which was valued at £1.5m according to details which have recently emerged.

Last year, she told the BBC World Service: "The records here are John and I can't imagine how we all would feel if, for whatever reason, they were

suddenly removed from us. It would be just awful.

"At the moment, it makes us feel rather good that they're all here. And we play them."

    But

she added: "I've got to be realistic and I know that there will be some period when we've got to say 'Come on, be sensible', because there's no way we

can play them all or appreciate them all."

It is two years ago this week since Peel's death. BBC 6Music will be marking the event with a series of

    programmes.
