    Default 14 March

    Holmefield Road, Aigburth.

The former Grange Hotel has been converted into apartments, and is now called Ivyhurst Manor.
Ivyhurst being its original name when it was built in the 1840s.

Holmefield Lodge opposite is probably the oldest house in Aigburth, being built some time in the 18th century.

Did you know that the statue was originally intended to go in Great George Square, but the residents argued too much about which way it should face, so it was decided to relocate it?

    Hi Philip

Similar to the story of the Washington Monument here in Baltimore. It was originally slated to go in Monument Square by the courthouse but people who had houses in the same square were afraid that it might fall on their houses, so instead the Washington Monument was moved to a rise north of town in what was then Howard's Woods, providing actually a better location (top picture), and the shorter Battle Monument (pictured bottom) was erected in Monument Square instead. Actually if you look closely at the old photograph of the Battle Monument you can see the top of the Washington Monument tiny in the distance to the right of the shaft, the Roman fasces, that makes up the column of the main monument in the shot.

What really blows me away with this website is the things you miss in this beautiful city when you don't look up...
