    Post Royal Institute history Q.

This week I was at the John Audubon Museum in Henderson KY - a stunning museum created in the 30's detailing Audubon's life story and travels.

There was an interesting Liverpool link - he had trouble selling his subscriptions for his Birds of America book - which was issued 5 pages each month, with a title page and cover sheet every 100 pages - letting the owners bind their own book locally. At 1000 dollars a subscription, it was pricey for the time.

He didn't get much acceptance in Philadelphia, and travelled to England to sell the book. He had an exhibition in Liverpool, and his diaries talk about selling 2 subscriptions (out of about 400 total) to the Roscoe and Rathbone families.

His diaries talk about his painting exhibition in the "Royal Institute" around 1820.

My question is ... what is/was the Royal Institute?

Aslo - are the Roscoe and Rathbone original books still in Liverpool, and are they on display anywhere?

Thanks again for the link.... I knew Roscoe and Rathbone helped found Liverpool University, and had residences named after them... but I never realized Greenbank house was one of them, even though I had been there.... when you are a young student, drink is more important than history...

If you get a chance to see the plates from his book, they are well worth a visit....

I think they are here, opened for the Culture year....

It was the Royal Institution (not Institute) in Colquitt Street. Thanks to my source.

    Cheers.

That's right Ged. It was the 'Liverpool Royal Institution' in Colquitt Street. It was previously Thomas Parr's House, built c. 1799 and is one of the few examples of a Georgian merchant house with combined warehousing in the backyard, which can be seen in the photo below.

I was just telling robbo the other day that Thomas Parr was a bit of a boaster. In Streets of Liverpool, James Stonehouse writes that "Mr Parr, used to boast that he had the handsomest house, wife, and horse in Liverpool"

I remember being shown the copy, of Audobons rather large book, when on an arranged visit to the library! The staff involved, seemed rather coy, about too many people knowing this book was kept there,as they feared that Mr.Hatton, who was in power at the time, would flog it to the highest bidder!!!
