Lightbulb What types of nefarious activities could a wharfinger get caught up with in 1911?

It was 3 months before the Transportation Strike erupted. A cold night in March when wharfinger Henry E. Connor has some assistance in taking a long walk off of a short pier.
Understandably, it was reported as a drowning, but legend had it the 'Liverpool Mafia' provided 'escort services'. I have found no information in old newspapers. Any ideas as to where I might look?
Also, which docks were off of Melbourne Street (Everton) which I see is no longer in existance!
    All ideas greatly appreciated!

Melborne Street ran between Netherfield Rd and St Domingo Rd. Hobart St ran off it. Thee are no docks in Everton.

Thank you Waterways for the link. Clearly there are no docks nearby. I ask because the housing on Melbourne were designated for dock personnel. So what would be the closest dock? Or are there too many to guess?
    Thanks Nathalie

    Hi Poolofiver,

In 1911 there was miles upon miles of docks that stretched along the Mersey. Liverpool had an overhead railway system [operating from 1893 until 1956] to serve them all, so dockers weren't limited to living within walking distance of any one dock. They perhaps would have wanted to live within walking distance of one of the stations en route? But I think it's going to be impossible for you to find a causal link between where someone lived and where they worked in the docks this way.

I'm surprised there's nothing in the local press? I thought all drownings would be reported? I'll have another look?

    Hello Daz,
Now I thought wharfingers had to live close to their dock because one of their responsibilites (which I cannot remember for the life of me) was time-sensitive so they had to be available at a moment's notice. I did find it interesting that one of the dock board members lived two houses down from my great-grandad.

It turns out it was gang-related. From what I understand, dockers were the frequent target of vient crimes, particularly robbery on payday. So it could have happened anywhere near the Mersey. I have checked all newspapers, old Liverpool crimes websites and have found nothing to date. Perhaps you will have more luck than I! Thank you for your interest- I need all the help I can get!
    Cheers!
