I know "The Wire" represents a small part of Baltimore, which has obviously suffered the sort of decline Liverpool did, but do you recognise that representation of that part as accurate? It would be good to hear from someone who lives there. I know Baltimore used to be very posh in Victorian times and obviously still have some lovely buildings. Where would be a good place to stay within the City for a tourist thingy
    Hello Partsky

I believe "The Wire" is fairly accurate as to what happens in the ghetto in terms of crime, drugs, guns, and violence, as was "Homicide: Life on the Streets" before that... I believe its the same producers and writing team. Where I go to see Liverpool FC play sometimes on the telly is Slainte Irish bar across the street from the Recreation Pier in Fells Point, the old seaport area of Baltimore. The Rec Pier was used as the headquarters in "Homicide" and is still painted in the blue police colors but looking a bit rundown with time. There's a plaque on there now. I believe I did read that the Rec Pier is going to be redeveloped as a hotel.

My friend and colleague John McCavitt and his family from Rostrevor, Northern Ireland, stayed at Homewood Suites on President Street which is within walking distance of the Inner Harbor and all the sights, so that seems to be a good place if you are looking for accomodations. My wife, who used to work for the National Aquarium, was able to arrange for free passes to get into the aquarium, so let me know if you are coming and perhaps we can arrange the same for you.

    All the best

My father was a corporal in the Royal Air Force medical corps. He told me a story about being in the French countryside before Dunkirk and seeing German Panzer tanks coming along the lane. He said he dived into a haystack to hide from the enemy. The below image of my Mom and Dad on their Wedding Day, February 22, 1945, was taken while the war was still ongoing -- it didn't end in Europe until May when the Russians captured Berlin. My Dad wore his RAF uniform but Mum wore a suit though she was in the Auxilliary Territorial Service (ATS) helping to monitor the German planes flying over Britain. Her ATS friends, all in uniform, formed a guard of honor for Mum and Dad when they emerged from St. Anne's Church in Aigburth after the service. The fold-out Christmas card at the bottom was sent by my father to my Uncle Doug, Mum's brother, from northern Germany (Schleswig-Holstein) at Christmas 1945. It shows the occupied zones of Germany, with the Russian section shown by the Soviet soldier dancing with the Russian bear at top right.

    All the best

    Chris

A nice New Year surprise here.

From David Ayers for the InterBoard Poetry Community (IBPC):

    Poets of the Decade

We are excited to honor the following ten poets, who have amassed the most total award “points” in the IBPC competitions over the last decade. Points were determined by adding 12 points for each winner, 9 points for each 2nd place, 8 points for each 3rd place, and 6 points for each HM, or Special Mention. The grand total for each poet is the sum of all the monthly competitions, plus the poem of the year and the poem of the decade competitions.

    1. Laurie Byro (224 points)
    2. Laurel K. Dodge (116)
    3. Sarah J. Sloat (112)
    4. Jim Zola (109)
    5. Bernard Henrie (99)
    6. Brenda Levy Tate (97)
    7. Catherine Rogers (86)
    8. Christopher T. George (80)
    9. Jude Goodwin (75)
    10. TE Ballard (73)

For individual breakdown of the achievements by places registered in the monthly and yearly IBPC competitions by the poets and by the boards go to:
