    Default Julia Wallace

I recently found out some new information regarding Julia. In his book The Murder of Julia Wallace James Murphy claims that "nothing is known for certain of her [Julia's] life between 1875 and 1910" (Murphy, pp.39).

I've found out that in 1881 Julia was living in Wandsworth, Surrey. She was an assistant governess (teacher). She was living with a family named Smith. I know it is a common surname but my hunch is that it was relatives, as Julia's mother's maiden name was Smith. I am trying to find out more with regard to Julia & WHW's earlier lives. Keep you posted when I do. I hope to include extensive information on them for the book, but it could be some time yet

    Well done Mark.

I was just thinking, (that's dangerous) - the chess club in the basement, North John st. In the late 1970s I used to go to a Beatles related shop owned by Jim and Liz Hughes called the Magical History Store, I'm sure this must've been the same premises. Have you tried ringing the buzzer to get in and get some pics?

Thanks Ged. Yes I think I remember it (vaguely) being a music related shop. I actually walked past the building (now an apartments) a few months ago and the door was open - I never had my camera with me but I had a look down the stairs. I might try and get in there.

    Hi Steve

She is stated as being 19 years of age in 1881. She was actually born on 28th April 1861 so the census might have been before April.

I added these to the Find A Grave site if anyone is interested:

    Thanks for that Mark

What I don't understand is why someone would reduce their age by 18 years.
Usually people do this by a few years or even a round figure of 10 but 18?

    cheers

    Hi Steve

Yes I know what you mean. I actually have a copy of Julia's birth certificate. I think there are some that have hinted that Wallace found out her actual age and that was a motive. I honestly believe that Wallace would have known her actual age before he married her.

She seems to be back in Yorkshire in 1891, claiming 28 as her age.

In 1901 she's in Hornsey (Middlesex) "living on own means", and for the first time she knocks a significant chunk off her age. She claims thirty, when in fact she's almost 40. [I haven't seen the original census enumeration, so I assume 30 isn't a mistranscription of 39]

    Hi Rod
The problem with relying on a census as regards age and place of birth is that it wasn't necessarily the subject person giving the information.
Even if they are listed as head of household it still may have been someone else giving the info.
However even if someone else gave the info 10 years in error is a lot.
    cheers

Phew, just a little short of 100K. Well spotted Lindy. A tidy bit more than WHW would have paid for it.
